(Aces
Full to Ante)
Aces Full - A full house consisting of three
aces and a pair of any other demonination card.
Ace-High
- A hand consisting of no pairs, straights, or flushes, and
that is not a full house with only "an Ace high."
Aces-Up
- A poker hand comprised of two pairs, one of which is aces.
Action
- Play during a game. Betting, raising, or checking can all
be considered action. When one at the poker table doens't make
a quick enough decision the dealer may say, "Sir, the action
is to you."
Active
Player - Any player still involved in a poker hand.
Add-On
- An optional additional purchase of chips usually done at the
end of the "rebuy period" of a poker tournament. Occassionally,
add-ons are available to be purchased at the beginning of a
tournament or throughout the rebuy period without having to
wait until the conclusion of the rebuy period to do so.
All
In - When a player bets all of his or her chips. In
a table stakes game, a player may not go into his or her pocket
for additional monies to continue play. Oftentimes, when a player
is All In, additional players will continue play and a side
pot will be created. Additionally, in some online poker games,
you are considered to be All In when you are disconnected from
the game even though you have additional chips to bet.
American
Airlines - A pair of Aces. Commonly used to refer to
a pair of Aces in the hole.
Ante
- A small forced bet paid by all players at a poker table prior
to the beginning of the hand. Typically, Texas Hold'em doesn't
use antes, though other variants of poker, and some Hold'em
Tournaments do call for antes prior to the start of a hand.
B
(Back
into a hand to Buy-In)
Back into a Hand - Drawing cards that make a hand that
is different from the hand you were originally trying to make.
For example, if you flopped a straight and the river card made
you a flush you would say that you backed into the flush.
Backdoor
- A term for a drawing hand where you need to catch both the
turn and the river to make your hand.
Bad
Beat - When a hand that is a large underdog beats
a heavily favored hand. Also, favorite parlance for players
who have just "busted out" and are hoping to describe
how the player they lost to had no business being in the hand
in the first place.
Belly
Buster - A draw to an inside straight.
Bet
- To place chips into the pot, to wager.
Bet
the Pot - When a player bets a wager equal to the total
amount of chips already in the pot.
Bicycle
(or Bike) - A straight consisting of an A-2-3-4-5.
Big
Blind - The larger of two forced bets (blinds) typically
used in a Texas Hold'em game. The Big Blind is posted by the
individual two seats to the left of the dealer.
Big
Slick - A nickname for hole cards consisting of an
Ace and a King.
Blank
- A term given to a card which is deemed to not have altered
the outcome of the hand when it hits the board. For example,
if the flop is AH, JH, QD, a 6S on the turn would be considered
a blank. On the other hand, the 6H, would not be a blank as
it theoretically could make a flush for a player.
Blind
- A forced bet put in by players prior to the dealing of the
cards. Similar to an ante, however blinds are typically only
paid by the two positions to the dealer's left in a Texas Hold'em
game, and typically are divided into the small (usually one
half bet), and large (a full bet) blinds. See also "Big
Blind," "Live Blind," and "Small Blind."
Blind
Raise - When a player raises without looking at his
hand.
Bluff
- An attempt by a player to make others at the table
believe he holds something which he does not. Typically, a bluff
involves making a bet, a raise, or a re-raise, when not holding
the best hand or when one clearly believes they are beat if
the hand goes to a showdown.
Board
(or Board Cards) - The combination of all community
cards dealt face up in a Texas Hold'em game(The Flop, Turn,
and River). In other poker variants, this term can be used to
describe cards that may or may not be community cards.
Bot
- Abbreviation for robot. Commonly used to describe a program
that plays poker online without any (or with little) human intervention.
Bottom
Pair - A pair consisting of one of a player's hole
cards, and the lowest card on the flop. For example, if the
player holds 8S, 7S, and the flop comes down AH, 10D, 8C, the
player has flopped bottom pair.
Brick
and Mortar (or B&M) - A term to indicate a real
land based casino as opposed to an online casino.
Broadway
- A term to identify a straight comprised of A-K-Q-J-10.
Bubble
(also Bubbled) - The time in a tournament when only
one more player needs to bust out before all remaining players
receive a portion of the prize money. To be bubbled is to lose
at that most unfortunate time just before qualifying for any
monies.
Bullets
- A term indicating a pair of Aces.
Bump
- A slang term indicating a raise. As in, "I'll bump it
to eight" in the first betting round of a four-eight limit
game.
Burn
(and Burn Card) - To discard the top card of the deck
face down prior to dealing. The burn card is the name of the
card discarded.
Bust
a Player - To take all of a player's chips. To knock
him or her from a tournament.
Bust
Out - To lose all of your chips and/or to be eliminated
from a tournament.
Busted
Hand - Commonly, a hand that has failed to fill out
a straight or a flush draw. Also, a worthless hand.
Button
- The dealer button. A small round disk that is moved from player
to player in a clockwise direction following the play of each
hand. Also commonly used to refer to the theoretical dealer
in a game of poker as in, "I'm on the button," or
"Jim is the button."
Buy
- A term to indicate one is trying to steal or "buy"
the pot. Used to describe a bluff bet where the player hopes
to cause all other players to fold. Also, to "Buy the Deal"
or "Buy the Button" whereby a player in late position
bets or raises to cause all players behind him to fold thus
securing the last position on all subsequent betting rounds.
Buy-In
- The amount of money required to play in a particular poker
game.
